I am sure many of you, like myself, have seen countless reels of helmet-cam footage of firefighters in action. All over the country, firefighters post videos of their “jobs,” highlighting the quick deployment of fire attack lines, that sweet rollover down the hallway, or the grab they got using VEIS. These videos are action-packed and awesome, but can they offer us more than a quick thrill and department bragging rights? By taking advantage of this technology, we can benefit in areas such as training, strategy and tactics, documentation, legal protection, and community outreach. Still, departments must develop policies to prevent misuse or problems that could arise.
Helmet cameras capture the action as the firefighters experience it first-hand. Details such as fire conditions, smoke color/volume/density, exposures, rescues and hazards can be captured throughout the incident. All this can then be played back on the TV at the firehouse for training purposes, helping firefighters improve on what they have done and experienced. Was the line adequately deployed? Were there any hazards we missed that we need to be more aware of in the future? What can the location, color, volume and density of the smoke tell us about where the fire is located inside the structure? This is a great way to evaluate skills that have already been taught, identify areas where there needs improvement and open discussion on doing things differently. Much better than a simulation run on a computer, video can provide real-life experiences to help improve the firefighter’s performance.
Not only can the helmet camera catch areas in which we need improvement, but it can also show where we did things right. Great hose deployment and tactics implemented by the crews will be shown through the video. This is a great way to lift up an individual or a crew and let them know what a good job they did. Other crews can even use their example.
The cameras can be used to develop a strategy for future incidents. By reviewing the video, the incident commander can get an idea of how the strategy worked from the firefighter’s point of view. Did the strategy take longer than expected to be implemented and take hold? Were there issues in the strategy that may have caused a delay in extinguishment or rescue? Did the strategic priorities need to be altered to due to changing conditions? These are all things we can learn after the incident, after looking at the video, and then using those revelations to help improve the strategy for similar calls in the future.
